Aconcagua For Leukaemia

Mount Aconcagua is the highest mountain in the western hemisphere and the highest outside Asia. Standing at 6962 M (22841 ft). This is my most ambitious climb yet and am proud to be doing it for this cause. I give a huge thank you to all the support I have received so far, not only in the wonderful sponsorship but also the kind words I have received from friends, family and tweeters Thanks. Paul.

Aconcagua For Leukaemia

The Mountain

At 6,962 metres (22,841 ft), Cerro Aconcagua is the highest mountain in the Americas, and the highest mountain outside Asia. It is located in the Andes mountain range, in the Argentine province of Mendoza. The summit is located about 5 kilometres from San Juan Province and 15 kilometres from the international border with Chile. It lies 112 km (70 mi) west by north of the city of Mendoza. Aconcagua is the highest peak in both the Western and Southern Hemispheres. It is one of the Seven Summits.

More facts:
40% of the oxygen at sea level.
2nd highest of the seven summits (after Everest).
renowned for its ferocious ‘white wind’, which pins climbers to the mountain (approx. 150kmph)
storms of an unbelievable force.
Frostbite and altitude sickness major health hazards.
Temperatures can plummet to -62°C at night.

Why?
Since leaving the Army I have been looking for ways to push myself to the limits, so why not use my love of mountain walking. In 2008 I completed a climb of Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, The UK 3 Peaks challenge and helped others achieve their goals of Mountains in UK. In 2009 I have continued to push myself and encourage others to reach goals by taking part in challenges throughout the UK.
What I have found more than satisfying is how the above has been a success in raising many thousands of pounds for various charities.
SO to push myself more was to take on an even more demanding Mountain and they dont get much higher or more demanding than this. So in Jan 2010 will be taking it on :)

The Charity
The Anthony Nolan Trust is a UK Charity that focuses on leukaemia and bone marrow transplantation. It manages and recruits donors to one of the two bone marrow registers in the United Kingdom; the other register is the British Bone Marrow Registry run by the National Blood Service. It also carries out pioneering research to help make bone marrow transplants more effective.
It is a charity that has touched me more than once in my life and is wonderful to help give to them in any way I can.

HOW YOU CAN HELP
I set out as always to help raise as much as possible for the chosen charity. Thanks to the immense support from Twitter/Facebook friends, family and colleagues I had raised my target to £5000 which is unbelievable and am approaching. Please help smash this target.
